We congratulate our Process Manager Luis Navarro for the recognition of "Best Presentation in Fluimin 2018", in which he exhibits about our Internal Pipelines Inspection Device "VOYAGER". This tool was developed 100% in our offices and has been tested in different pipelines successfully in the detection of internal anomalies.

Project Management Course on Project Processes and Practices

On January 11, 2017, as many as 24 BRASS employees participated in the Project Management Course on Project Processes and Practices sponsored by BRASS as held in the BRASS Training Room. A special consultant and expert on the subject, Mr. Fernando Romero, was hired to deliver the 2-day course that consisted of theoretical lecture, a round of question/answer and concluded with a group Role Playing simulation for a case situation that is similar to a day-to-day project activity.

Mauricio Rios

Mauricio Rios assumes the position of deputy general manager of BRASS Chile S.A., Mauricio graduated and holds a degree of Civil Engineering – Mechanical in Concepcion University, a diploma in Project management in Pontifica Universidad Catolica, Master in Business Administration (MBA) and a course in strategy implementation in Fundação don Cabral de Brasil. Mauricio arrived in BRASS Chile in the year 2003 at BRASS Chile and Between the years 2008 - 2016 became our general manager of the BRASS Brasil office. Mauricio is focus on achieving results, defining and implementing strategies, developing new business and economic / financial returns.

BRASS in CRU’s 2016 World Copper Conference

The CRU’s 15th World Copper Conference was held last 4th to 6th of April at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Santiago, Chile. The event, which is an integral part of the CESCO Week, is the world’s foremost gathering of the copper industry’s top executives and attracts over 450 delegates from 30 countries, representing the world’s major miners, smelters and financial institutions.

This year, the CEO of BRASS Chile, Mr. Roy Betinol, made a presentation entitled Understanding transportation of copper concentrates through long distance pipeline, which focused on, presenting in layman’s terms, the process needed to develop a pipeline project that satisfies current economic situation and governmental regulatory requirements. This presentation was made under the section Case Study Collection – Striving for technical excellence in the copper industry.

In addition BRASS Chile maintained an exhibit that allows presentation of main products and services to attendees.

Toromocho Tailings Systems Project

The Toromocho Project is located in the District of Morococha, Yauli Province, Junin region, Perú. This project is based on concentrates copper, molybdenum, and silver with respective grades of 0.48%, 0.019%, and 6.88 grams per ton. The ore reserve is estimated to be 1526 million tons. It is expected to produce one million tons of copper, ten thousand tons of molybdenum, and four million ounces of silver annually. Consequently approximately fifty million tons of tailings will be impounded annually. The impoundment is located in a box canyon with a dam constructed across the entrance.

BRASS Engineering International, Inc. in San Ramon, California, USA completed basic and detailed engineering for the tailings pump station and distribution pipelines. Presently the system is in the pre-operational phases: mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and start-up. It is expected that BRASS will assist in post start-up training as well. The tailings distribution is expected to deposit the thickened tailings at 69% to 70% concentration. The starting elevation is at 4523 masl and terminates 4.7 km at an elevation of 4777 masl. Due to pressure requirements the pump station uses 10 of the world’s largest positive displacement pumps in an 8 + 2 operating mode. The pump station is the world’s largest pump station of this kind and also operates at the highest elevation in world.

BRASS Chile conducted the traditional end of the year celebration along with a delicious cocktail and together with all of our staff members. In this event highlighted the words expressed by our General Manager Roy Betinol with a review of our work in 2013 and inspiring words for a successful 2014. This year our Mechanical Engineer, Benigno López, received the 10 years award (10 years working in BRASS) and during this celebration, the Chilean government service, SENDA, gave an award to BRASS Chile with an certification for the dedication and constant work in the "Working with Healthy Lifestyle Program".

Typhoon Haiyan, Philippines

Typhoon Haiyan, the most powerful storm ever recorded on earth, with winds over 320 km/h (199mph) hit Philippines this past November 2013. It caused over 7,000 casualties and left nearly over 2 million people homeless. Most of those who survived the typhoon suffered infectious diseases from open wound, dehydration for lack of drinking water and pulmonary diseases for lack of shelter. People live in temporary shelters with no water and electricity

BRASS, having committed to the principle of community awareness, organized and sent help to the typhoon victims. A BRASS Chile employee was sent to supervise the distribution of relief goods in Ormoc, Leyte. The company's effort was augmented with personal donations from BRASS employees, Filipinos living in Chile and among Chilean friends. Over 500 families were recipient of the distribution of food, medicine, and temporary shelter.

Rio Pipeline 2013

BRASS Chile and BRASS Brazil participated in the RIO PIPELINE Conference & Exposition last September 2013, at the SulAmérica Conventions Center, in Rio de Janeiro. The event was attended by more than 2.200 visitors from 150 different companies, who introduced new and emerging technologies. BRASS team presented the following technical papers and case studies related to pipeline transport systems:

  • Use of Hydraulics Simulator, A Step Towards Certification of Operators (José Diaz).
  • Impact of Transition Velocity in Concentrate Transport (Dieter Schuchhardt).
  • Slurry Pipeline Slope Restrictions, Slurry Pipeline Design (Hector Oberg).

  • Corrosion on Water and Slurry Pipelines (Julio Vivianco).
  • Bauxita Paragominas Mining Pipeline Project

    The Commissioning and Start-Up activities of the Pump Station 2 for Bauxita Paragominas Mining Pipeline Project was performed between August 14th and August 20th 2013. The engineering of this station was carried out by BRASS in 2009 and includes 6 GEHO TZPM2000 positive displacement main pumps and all necessary auxiliary systems such as seal water for centrifugal charge pump, station & control air system, motor & VFD cooling system and fire protection system. The pump station (PS2) is also provided with 1 unit concentrate receiving and storage tank

    In general, the 24" Bauxite Pipeline is 246 km in length and has 2 Pump Stations, 4 Monitoring Stations and 1 Valve and Transfer Station which distributes flow to two independent Terminal Stations: Barcarena and Alunorte.

    PS2 is a key component for the expansion plan which is to raise the production from 11,47 Mtpa. to 14.85 Mtpa. The system is designed to operate flexibly either with the original pump station (PS1) alone (in case of low production) or in booster mode, with the second pump station (PS2) in series, increased production.

    During start up, the system performed exceptionally well meeting design target requirements, such as, working pressure, flow rate and throughput. During the running of the 6 main pumps it was observed that the station piping were stable and did not experience any excessive vibration.

    Hydro Operations Personnel (project operators) were truly satisfied with the Station general performance in either manual or automatic mode.

    BRASS Training Center

    Our Client’s constant need for well-trained pipeline operators opened an opportunity for BRASS to create a subsidiary dedicated to meeting this requirement. For this reason, the BRASS Training Center was created in Chile to support its local mining clients. The center was validated and received authorization from the "Organismos Técnicos de Capacitación (OTEC)" an agency authorized by the country’s National Training and Employment Agency. Undoubtedly, the opening of this subsidiary will serve as a conduit for the transfer of technology to pipeline operators.

    Water Footprint

    The water footprint corresponds to the volume of fresh water consumed, evaporated or contaminated as a result of the production goods and services of a company. The water footprint along with the carbon footprint provides an impact measure of the product or service towards the environment. In choosing solutions or products that tend to have less of a footprint, it is therefore possible to guide the process towards sustainability.

    Just as BRASS has been a pioneer in the calculation of the carbon footprint, seeking to aim to its own engineering solutions to minimize this affect, we also have the desire and drive to be pioneers in directing our decisions making and our engineering towards those that minimize the water print. We will begin working starting from the second quarter of this year in defining the methodology for the calculation of the water footprint at BRASS as well as in our drawings.

    With great satisfaction we are pleased to announce that according to the Certification audit conducted at our facilities, Bureau Veritas has decided to recommend BRASS for issuance of the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001certificates, which are related to our Environmental Management and Health and Safety systems, respectively.

    In obtaining these important and vital certifications, it strongly states the company's commitment and concern for the integrity of the personnel that has become part of the company and in the protection of the environment. With this in mind and the quality certification that BRASS has, it sets us part of other similar companies in terms of Quality, Safety, and Occupational Health/Environmental safety.
